New Year Resolutions or New Year Reality?

As this year is drawing to an end have you already started thinking about what the New Year will bring for you?

It’s a time when most of us begin to daydream about how different the next twelve months will be and are ready to slam the door on yet another year that hasn’t gone quite the way we had planned.

What’s on your wish list for 2020?

Signing up for a gym membership and actually committing to use it past the first few weeks of January?

Being more organised?

Embarking on a new healthy eating regime that doesn’t include eating an entire family sized bag of crisps and bar of chocolate and telling yourself it constitutes dinner?

Saying no to the things that you just don’t want to do and not feeling guilty for it?

Are these the things you ‘should’ be doing?

Absolutely not drinking alcohol ever again after a New Years Day hangover from hell makes you think that dry 2020 would be a wise choice for your liver?

Saying yes to new opportunities?

Finally making some changes that mean your finances are at last in a better shape than they have been the last few years?

Cutting out toxic people from your life who don’t support you?

Whatever you want the new year to bring for you, don’t leave it until January to make a plan about what you want, the best time to do that stuff is right now!

You may tell yourself you’re too busy with present shopping, decorating the house, xmas nights out and a million other things that you think you ‘should’ be doing.  But if you don’t take some time to plan for all the things you want for your life in the fast approaching new year, you will be halfway to spring and still no further forward.

The perfect time to begin getting your shit together is before the bells chime at midnight on the last day of December.  So what is it you really want?  What would make your life better?  What would make your heart sing every day? 

Start by writing it down, research by clever people far more intelligent than myself shows that writing down what you want to achieve goes a long way to making it actually happen; and did you know that if you hand write this stuff, as opposed to tapping it out on a device you’re 40% more likely to see it turn into reality.

Well worth sitting down for ten minutes with a cuppa, no distractions and spilling the jumble of thoughts that rattle around in your head onto paper.

It doesn’t need to be anything fancy, it doesn’t need to be in any order, it doesn’t matter what you write it on, or how scruffy it is, what matters most is that you actually do it!

Begin by having the most enormous brain dump ever!  And I mean ever!  The hugest offloading you can imagine, emptying out the deepest, darkest corners of your brain, digging out the long forgotten dreams that you had long ago banished to the outer realms of reality. 

If money, time, location, all your usual restrictions in life didn’t exist, what would you desire? 

What job would you have, where would you live, what would you buy, how would you spend your time, what would you wear, where would you go.   Think about what is really important to you, all the things which you would like to bring into your life.

  Don’t waste time thinking about how or when it would happen or if it’s possible, that bit comes later.  For now just get it all out there and open up your mind to the wondrous world of potential that awaits you!

It’s a busy place in there, get it all out!

Once you see everything written down it then becomes an easy step to see the things which you can easily build into your life, but don’t go hell for leather trying to do everything all at once; that’s a one way route to the demon of overwhelm which will see you actually doing nothing. 

Pick one thing and commit to it, yes, just one!  It’s far easier to make one small change and be successful with it, than to make a haphazard attempt at ten massive ones and fail miserably.  That will only leave you feeling rubbish, wondering why you bothered and facing the rest of the new year with a miserable knowledge that nothing will ever be any different.

There is so much pressure on us all to be the perfect mum, boss, wife, husband, child, dad, brother, sister, cook, cleaner, worker, lover, have the perfect life, children, home, job, family, literally everything!  When do we stop and think about what we want?  The answer is NOW!

Don’t get hung up on a billion new year resolutions, write your list, and focus on making one small change, and do it now, not next year, now!

Start putting the wheels in motion for the things you want to achieve, your 2020 self will thank you for it, I promise!

Start in the direction you mean to continue

No one ever managed to climb a mountain without first taking one small step.  So stop bumbling around with the usual go on a diet, stop drinking, go to the gym nonsense that most of us tell ourselves on January 1st, and focus on making one small change that is important to you, and you alone.  Think about what you need to do to make it happen, think about what it means to you, how it will make you feel.  Focus on the end result and you will find a way to achieve it.

You will always be busy, and you will always find an excuse not to do something, perhaps the first change to make is allowing yourself time to honour your own wishes and commit to the new year reality that you want, not the new year resolutions you think you ‘should’ have.
